Bio

Dr. Wilson is originally from Laurel County, but in high school his family moved to Chattanooga, Tennessee.  He attended University of Tennessee – Chattanooga and returned to Kentucky to work in the State Treasurer’s office for several years, and then pursued an MBA from Suffolk University in Boston.  From there he traveled to England where he hung around the campus of Essex University.  Though not a student there, he was able to attend classes and developed an interest in public administration and economic development.  He returned to the United States to take his PhD from Florida Atlantic University.

Professor Wilson’s primary research is on the behavior of local governments in financial crisis.  He studies how local governments respond to falling tax revenues and economic dislocations.  However, his interests in economic development are wider than one project.  He also looks at how universities and other educational institutions contribute to the development –civic and economic –of their host communities, and how rural areas, such as Eastern Kentucky, can develop their communities to survive in the 21st century.

The implications of his research on his teaching are obvious.  Masters students at EKU learn from his experience in both the public and private sector about how to build up their communities.  To further facilitate the practical learning, Dr. Wilson has his students do projects in the surrounding community to not only build up our own host city, but also to develop the skills necessary to serve as development and financial experts in the future.

Work in the community is also a big part of his philosophy of education.  When students are at the university, they need to take the opportunities available to them to learn and develop themselves.  He recommends that students get to know their professors and make use of the on-and-off campus activities that enrich the education experience.

Away from EKU, Dr. Wilson is a fan of athletics, in particular he is a big fan of the Norwich City Football Club (F.C. –an English Premier League soccer team).
